Easy Ways to Get Some Peace

"Peace of mind” is up to each of us, but it isn’t always easy to obtain. Stressors from work, family, money, and other areas of life can get to us, even on the best of days. So how do we find peace in stressful situations? Here are 10 ways you can get some peace of mind throughout the day:

  1. Try a breathing technique – long deep breaths or breathing through alternate nostrils are common techniques people use to relieve stress on the spot.

  2. Treat your body well. Eat healthy, exercise (especially slower exercise such as yoga, Qigong, Tai Chi, walking, swimming,…), get enough sleep, and get a professional massage regularly.

  3. Try some meditation. There are guided meditations or simply soothing meditative music available on YouTube, iTunes, and Amazon Music.

  4. Release. Visualization is a technique in which you visualize whatever or whomever is the source of your stress being whisked away by the wind or otherwise fading away from you, leaving you in peace. Coupled with deep breathing, it can be very effective in relieving stress.

  5. Let nature nurture you – research shows that spending time in nature is healing to both body and mind. In fact, in some countries, doctors actually prescribe it. Try a walk a woods or a park near you.

  6. Spend time with friends. Sometimes venting, talking or laughing with friends can be very helpful in tough times.

  7. Have a hobby? Hobbies can serve as a distraction from our problems or calm our nerves in times of anxiety. Find a hobby you love and watch the joy return.

  8. Write. Some people journal their negative feelings to let go of them, while others write lists of things for which they are grateful. Both methods can help bring peace of mind.

  9. Take time to smell the roses – or orange, lavender, bergamot, or peppermint. Aromatherapy can be fun and relaxing.

  10. Faith – either religious faith, or just the faith in knowing that all things in life (yes, even problems!) are temporary, can be of great comfort in rough times. In addition, a little faith in oneself is always a good thing; after all, you have survived 100% of everything life has thrown at you thus far – you’ve got this, too!
